Spondylolysis refers to a defect in part of the vertebral bone that joins the facet joints in the back of the spine; in other words, it is a defect between the vertebrae. Most cases of spondylolysis occur in the lower lumbar spine, though it can rarely happen elsewhere in the spinal column. The defect can be congenital (one is born with it), or it can develop over time, especially in people with smaller than average vertebral bones.
Spondylolysis can be a genetic condition, and it tends to run in families. It can also be caused by certain repetitive activities, and it happens more frequently in people who regularly participate in sports including tennis, diving, football, volleyball, cricket (fast bowling), baseball, gymnastics, and weightlifting. In addition, men are more often affected than are women, and it is seen more in younger individuals with the mid-teens being a common time for diagnosis.
This condition is often caused by a stress fracture, and it can in turn lead to development of spondylolisthesis, where a vertebral body slips forward over the one below it.
Most people with this condition have no symptoms; many are unaware they even have the condition. When symptoms do arise (often at the time of the adolescent growth spurt), the most common symptom is pain in the lower back. It may feel more like a muscle strain than spinal pain, and it tends to get worse with vigorous activity.
Treatments commonly involve physical therapy, pain medications (short term), rest, and wearing a back brace.
Surgery is rarely necessary, but when it is, you need to choose a spine surgeon in Manhattan. Surgery can release any compressed nerves and usually this is achieved with a Laminectomy.
