CERVICAL FRACTURES

Don’t Let Your Fractured Neck Fracture Your Life

Treatment of Cervical Fractures

Spinal Disorders – Cervical Fractures

The cervical spine is located in the neck. It comprises your spinal cord, which is protected by seven vertebral bones and cushioning intervertebral discs. It extends from the base of the skull (where the spinal cord enters the brain) to the junction of the neck and the shoulders (where it becomes the thoracic spine).

Most spinal fractures cause compression on the spinal cord, with the vertebra pressing down on the spinal canal. Damage to the spinal cord in this region can be extremely serious, and in severe cases it has the potential to cause paralysis of the entire body. It is critical that any injury to the neck, no matter how minor it initially seems, be medically assessed and treated immediately. In most cases, with proper treatment, a full recovery is possible.

What Causes Cervical Fractures?

There are numerous causes of fracture to the bones of the cervical spine, and these are most commonly from traumatic incidents including auto-accidents, sports injuries, and falls. Spinal fractures, including those of the cervical spine, may also occur as the outcome of degenerative diseases like osteoporosis, or rarely can be caused by a spinal tumor.

Treatment of Cervical Fractures

When Should I Seek the Services of a Spinal Specialist for Cervical Fractures?

Consult a spinal specialist promptly if you experience:

An injury to the neck or upper back, including : A severe strain or sudden twist to the neck (e.g. whiplash)

A severe blow to the head or neck (e.g. diving injury, skiing or horseback riding fall)

Tenderness, swelling or bruising of the neck

Tingling anywhere in the body

Numbness anywhere in the body including arms and fingers

Muscle weakness of the arms or legs

Difficulty walking or using your arms

Changes to bladder or bowel function

Changes to sexual function

Difficulty breathing following an injury

Treatment of Cervical Fractures – The Epitome of Care

Treatment depends upon the nature of the injury, including the severity of the fracture, the stability of the area, which cervical bones are affected, and whether there are any neurological symptoms.

Where injury is severe, surgical decompression of the spinal cord may be required. This is where it’s essential to consult with an expert surgeon.
